Looking Back So You(tm) Can Move Forward

December is one of my favorite months. Now, I admit I might be biased about this (my birthday falls in December!), but I really like this month because it's not only one of the most festive times of the year, but also because December is the one time during the year when most of the eyes of the world look to the future with hope and anticipation. As a result, December always seems to be the month when a lot of advice surfaces around setting visions for the future, anticipating what the next 12 months will bring, setting goals for the coming year, etc. Case in fact: Do a Google search for "how to set a new year's resolution," and you'll get millions of hits!


Please don't get me wrong with what I'm about to say - I'm definitely a forward-looking person - but I actually tend to think that spending time reflecting on the past year is just as important - if not more important - than looking to the future. After all, if you haven't learned from where you've been, how can you be sure you're heading in the right direction? How can you course-correct if necessary? Not taking time to reflect on, and learn from, the past may lead to making the same mistakes in the future, over and over and over again. And, that's no way to build a brand.


To help with this, I'm sharing below the top five questions I like to ask myself and my coaching clients when the year-end rolls around. I hope they bring you some good reflection and, ultimately, help you build an even stronger brand - whether for your company or for YOU™ - the trademarked you.



  • If you were writing a book about the past year and had to sum it up in one simple title, what would that title be?
  • What were the three best things that happened to you and/or to your company in 2010?  Spend some time reflecting on how those positive events came about ... was it through making connections you hadn't otherwise made?  Through someone paying you back for something you did for them?  Consider how to harness that same positive outcome in other areas of your work and life.
  • What were the three worst things that happened to you or your company in the past year, and what did you learn from them? I encourage my coaching clients to look at "bad" situations objectively, and celebrate the growth they achieved as a result - even if the situations were painful at first. If you can get into the habit of thinking of life and your career as an adventure and not "what's going to hurt me next," you can begin to stop worrying and enjoy yourself, expecting the best possible outcome. And the personal brand you will communicate will change for the better as well.
  • Now, look at your individual collection of personal and professional "ups" and the "downs" from 2010, and ask yourself how have those events shaped your corporate or personal brand over the past 12 months? How have they molded your business, or you as a person, a business leader, a boss, a spouse/significant other, a parent, a sibling, a son or daughter, or any of the other important roles you play?
  • How will all of these learnings alter the way you move forward into the New Year?  What will you do differently as you think about starting 2011?

By the way, don't just keep these questions to yourself - grab your work team and/or a close friend or relative and ask them the same questions.  It's always fascinating to see how other people perceive what is going on in your life and work -- through their eyes!

Executive Coaching On the Rise
As you look to 2011, what would you say is the most critical success factor for business growth in your company? If you're like 91% of the respondents in a study of CEOs in North America, Europe, and Asia, you would say "developing leaders." In this article, we'll explore why leadership development has become more vital to business success than ever, and why companies are now overwhelmingly choosing a previously-untapped resource - Executive Coaching - as a key part of the solution.

Executive Coaching On the Rise 

In a Fortune 500 survey, 43% of CEOs and 71% of senior executive team members said that they have worked with a coach, 63% of companies said they plan to increase their use of coaching over the next five years, and 92% of leaders who have used a coach in the past plan to do so again.

In a study of 370 participants who had worked with executive coaches, the group went from the 50th percentile in performance to the 93rd percentile.
